Using Your Beard Trimmer
1. Oil your trimmer. If you have a beard trimmer that needs an oil, make sure that your trimmer is oiled up to stay working correctly. Put a few drops of oil over the blades and then use your trimmer.
- It’s better to use the oil that comes with the trimmer. After you have applied oil to the blades, wipe off any excess oil with a dry, soft cloth.
- When oiling your trimmer, you should make sure that you have brushed off any excess hair from the blades.
- Run the blades for about 20 seconds after oiling.
- Thoroughly wipe the blades down to make sure that the tops of your blades are dry, so hair does not stick.
2. Begin shaving. Start long and finish short. If you’ve a sizeable beard and want to cut it down to a respectable, but still present length, then start trimming with your number 3 guard comb. Go over your entire beard.
- To get the best results, you have to place the flat part of a beard comb against your face.
- You want to shave against the grain, that means in the direction you feel resistance. So, point your blades up and shave up against the grain.
- Shave both your face and your neck.
- If you do not see any change in length, you may have to switch to a lower guard.
Expert Tip: “Use a guard or a comb while you are trimming. Avoid using the clippers freehand, especially while you are still learning. That way, if your hand moves while you are trimming, you will be less likely to take a chunk out of your beard accidentally.”
3. Switch to a lower guard. Once you have gone over your neck and face and have a good length, trim your neck. Using a lower guard(like 1), buzz the hair from your Adam’s apple to under your jawline. And shave in an upward motion against the grain.
- If you want to go shorter, remove the guard and shave with the blades of trimmer.
- You can also leave about 2 inches under your jaw unshaven with your no one-guard. Then fade that area by shaving with no two-guard.
Expert Tip: Trim your beard along your neck so that it stops between your jawline and the wrinkle on your throat.
4. Clean up any strays. You have to make sure that you get a smooth shave everywhere for any stray hairs (by looking in the mirror). You also want to shave areas below your Adam’s apple with the blades on your trimmer.
- If you trimmed your neck with your 0 size guard or want more of a fade, then completely shave the area(using a razor) below your Adam’s apple.
Cleaning Up and Maintaining Your Trimmer
Your trimmer will release a lot of small clippings. It is best to place a wastebasket below when shaving to reduce the mess.
- And let your clippings fall into a wastebasket after that grab a damp paper towel and wipe up any stray clippings.
Clean guards: Remove guard, which you have on your trimmer and place the used guard in the sink. You can rinse it with soap and warm water (to remove any hair that may be sticking) because the guards are plastic.
Clean trimmer: Remove the clipper head from the handle and rush away any hair that is caked to the trimmer using the brush that came with your beard trimmer.
- You can remove the trimmer’s blade head by pushing up with your thumb. You’ll hear a popping noise once you have disconnected the blades.
- Clean the blade grooves using a cotton swab.
- Once you have removed all the hair, place the blade head back on the trimmer and run it for a few seconds.
- Unless you have a waterproof beard trimmer, never run it under water because this can rust the blades and can break the trimmer.
Oil your trimmer. If you oil your beard trimmer before shaving, you do not have to oil it again. But it’s a good maintenance habit to oil your trimmer after use. It’s a better practice to drop a few drops of oil onto the blades after shaving your beard. Then run your trimmer for about 20-30 seconds.
- Proper oiling your trimmer allows the motor and blades to stay lubricated, and it ensures the longevity of your trimmer’s life too.
- Wipe your trimmer down with a paper towel or clean cloth to remove any excess oil.
Additional Beard Trimming Tips:
- Trim your beard when it is dry: You will get a better sense of how it will look.
- Invest in a solid pair of trimmers: Because they will last much longer and are far more durable.
- Do not assume all guards are the same length: Every brand’s measurements are slightly different. Always start with a higher guard before settling into your preferred length.
- When you trim the underside, stretch out the skin: The neck skin can bunch together, so be sure you are grazing over the actual surface of the skin.
